Ecuador players celebrating a shock World Cup win over Germany
Ecuador’s win over Germany was the headline result of the night.

Matchday 3 finished the bottom half of the group draw on 25 June, with the standout story being Germany losing to Ecuador and still going through. For New Zealand fans tracking the best-third-place maths, these six results matter: they help set the points bar the All Whites are chasing against Belgium.

Every Result at a Glance

Match Score Group
Turkey vs United States 3–2 D
Paraguay vs Australia 0–0 D
Curaçao vs Ivory Coast 0–2 E
Ecuador vs Germany 2–1 E
Japan vs Sweden 1–1 F
Tunisia vs Netherlands 1–3 F

Germany Survive an Ecuador Scare

Sané struck inside two minutes, but Ecuador replied through Angulo (9′) and Plata (77′) to win 2–1. Germany still advanced, topping Group E on goal difference ahead of Ivory Coast, who beat Curaçao 2–0 thanks to a Pépé brace. Ecuador finished third and now face a wait on the best-third rankings.

Even in defeat Germany progressed, which shows how much room the 48-team format gives the stronger nations.

Australia Sneak Through, Turkey Crash Out

There was a notable result for the region: Australia’s goalless draw with Paraguay was enough to take second in Group D on goal difference, sending the Socceroos into the Round of 32. The United States topped the group despite a 3–2 loss to Turkey, a game settled by Ayhan deep into stoppage time, but it was Turkey, not the Americans, going home.
